A BETTER COVENANT
HEBREWS 8:10-12 NKJ
HEBREWS 8:10-12 NKJ
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."
OBSERVATION:
The writer of Hebrews is continuing to build his case that what we have in Christ is better than anything we left behind.
To individuals who were well versed in Jewish law and an understanding of the old covenant, this is a super solid argument.
In our verses for today, the writer once again goes back to the old testament prophetic scriptures to make his point. He quotes Jeremiah, Zachariah, and Isaiah, who all spoke of the new thing, the new covenant God would establish through Jesus.
God would not just write laws on scrolls and tablets of stone. Now, God puts His laws in our minds and writes them on our hearts. The emphasis shifts from outside physical things to inside spiritual things.
Also, He would continue to be God to the people under His new covenant. And the people who accept this new covenant through Jesus are now His people.
Now everyone under this better new covenant can have a relationship with God. Now all can come to know Him regardless of background, ancestry, gender, or economic status.
And here is where it gets extra good. Under our new covenant, God is merciful to our unrighteousness. And our sins and wrong acts He will not remember. How much better is that?
APPLICATION:
You will not need to make the conversion from the Moasaic law to see the better covenant that we have in Christ.
Simply reading this book again is a great reminder of what we have in Christ. No longer do we need to lament not being God's people. We are His people every bit as much as those who came out of Egypt with Moses and actually even more.
We are no longer servants of God. We are sons of God due to our better covenant in Christ. We are forgiven and made righteous. We can come near to God. We have better promises.
There is no need to long for the old because the new is so much better.
PRAYER:
Thank you, Father. Thank You, Jesus, for all You have done. I am part of the tribe of the blessed in Christ.
