ON THE RIGHT PATH

Proverbs 10:17 CSB
17 The one who follows instruction is on the path to life,
but the one who rejects correction goes astray.

Staying on the right path is important. When you are hiking in the mountains the right path is important. When you are making your way through life the right path is even more important.

A number of years ago, Joy and I were hiking in the mountains of North Carolina near where I went to college. It was a beautiful day, and we were on a path through the cool, shaded mountains, taking a summer break from the Texas heat. On this particular day, Joy decided she wanted to lead the way. And in an unconscious moment of brain immobility, I agreed. My darling wife is gifted in many areas however she is directionally challenged.

So off we go on a trail I had never hiked before. This trail was in a public area, and typically wide and easy to follow. But the trial continued to narrow to the point we could barely discern the trail from the underbrush. Finally, we wound up with me having to push Joy up a steep slope. And we came out in the parking lot of a gravel pit. We had gone totally astray. Thus, ending Joy’s career as hike leader. We laughed about it then because the recovery was minimal, but in life, the recovery is not that easy.

The Bible was given to us to reveal God and His Son Jesus. And the scriptures are given to us to reveal God’s ways for mankind. The One who created us knows what works in life. So, as we follow His word and His Holy Spirit, we are on the right path in all areas of life. On God’s path of life, our health, mental outlook, and relationships are blessed. On God’s path of life, we learn how to live on a different level. Following God’s path and ways, there is peace in our homes and in our hearts.

But when we refuse correction and instruction, we get off on the wrong path. There, the going gets harder, and we wind up in the wrong place. The choice is ours.

But let’s also note that following God’s instructions puts us on the right path, but it doesn’t mean everything is easy. We walk by faith, not by sight, so God’s path will not always appear the most reasonable or most visible. And God’s ways and instructions do not always sit well with our feelings. This is where we trust Him. God’s path is a path of love and forgiveness. God’s path is giving and serving. God’s path requires discipline and focus. God’s path of life is typically not crowded, but it sure winds up in good places.

PRAYER

Father, I receive Your instruction and correction. I desire to stay on Your path of life for all areas of my life. Thank You for Your word and Your Spirit to guide me on the right path.
