Who Is the Lord?
Psalms 28:6-9 NKJV
6 Blessed be the Lord,
Because He has heard the voice of my supplications!
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices,
And with my song I will praise Him.
8 The Lord is their strength,
And He is the saving refuge of His anointed.
9 Save Your people,
And bless Your inheritance;
Shepherd them also,
And bear them up forever.
It is good to bring the Lord into all aspects of our lives. He is the Lord of more than just the time we spend in church. He is worthy to be brought into all aspects of our lives. Here in this psalm, we find David declaring who the Lord is to him.
I believe this is one of the keys to David’s success in life. Oh, he had his share of troubles, more than the average person. But he seemed to come through almost every one of them. When the dust settled, David was still standing. It was more than David’s resolve or his personality. David’s life was built around his relationship with God. In the Psalms, we get a glimpse of how he related to the Lord.
David constantly declared who the Lord was to him personally. And David constantly affirmed his trust in the Lord, his confidence in God. In our verses for today, David declares that the Lord heard his supplications or his requests. Not hope so. David blessed the Lord, who heard his prayers. Then David declared that the Lord was his strength and his shield. If you are engaged in battles, strength and protection are vital. Then again, David confidently asserts that he trusted in God and was helped. Notice, David said his heart trusted in God. Trust is of the heart, not the feelings. In his heart, David trusted God to hear him, strengthen him, and protect him. That’s good stuff.
David then points to God as the strength and safe place for His anointed, we might say the chosen ones. David asks the Lord to save, bless, and Shepard His people. It’s too easy to read over these things, but this is David assigning to God these wonderful attributes. Is it surprising that David walked with the Lord in a strong way?
Application
This psalm is a good checkup for me. What am I saying about the Lord? Who am I declaring His is in my life? Don’t be fooled into thinking that we can’t do this. David was a servant of God, while we are in God’s very own family as His sons and daughters. If anyone could be declaring who God is, it would be us.
God is my help and strength. God is the One who hears me and watches over me. He leads me by His Holy Spirit, forgives me of my sins, and hears me when I pray. At first blush, that may seem presumptuous. But if David can declare these things as a servant, surely, we can as His children.
Determine who God is to you. Maybe you have not seen Him in this light, but you can declare about Him what He has said in His Word. The next step is to make it personal.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for all that You are to me—my Savior, Healer, Helper, and Shepherd. And You are my very own Father. I am blessed to be a part of Your family.
